Ultrasound is a non-invasive way of having a look inside the body, especially the abdomen and the chest. It is generally complimentary to x-rays, as it is particularly good when there is a lot of fluid present, but not so good when there’s a lot of gas.
Echocardiography: Ultrasound is remarkably good at giving us more information about heart disease and means we can optimise treatment to the cause of the disease, not just the symptoms. It allows us to look at the chambers of the heart as well as the vessels and valves within and around the heart too.
Abdominal Ultrasound: There are multiple uses of ultrasound within the abdomen, particularly when we want more information before going to surgery. It can help us look for sites of tumour spread in the case of cancers, or even to identify where the cancer is. It will allow us to look inside organs such as the intestines or bladder which even at surgery we can’t easily assess. It’s also great for detecting pregnancy and reproduction problems very early on.
Small Parts: Ultrasound can be used for looking at a range of small parts such as tendons, eyes, lymph nodes etc.
