Xylitol is a sugar replacement product which is found in various food products, including some sugar free baked goods, chewing gum, lollies and can be purchased as a processed powder for use in baking. Unfortunately Xylitol is toxic to dogs and can lead to a sudden drop in blood sugar which can cause seizures and even liver failure in some cases.
We encourage you to always read the label on food products and to not presume that a product that is safe for humans is safe for your pet. Xylitol has been approved by Food Standards Australia and New Zealand for human consumption and is referenced as food additive code number 967 on food labels.
Within 10-15 minutes of ingestion, dogs can develop low blood sugar (hypoglycaemia) which causes loss of coordination and in some cases vomiting. This can then lead to seizures, body collapse and even liver failure. Vet treatment is required immediately.
If you suspect your pet has ingested a product with Xylitol in it, please contact our vet healthcare team.
